Art at the University of Copenhagen, The main building

The University was burnt down during the english bombardement in 1887, and economic difficulties delayed the opening of a new building until October 1836. The Main Building (architect Peter Malling) is a major achievement in Danish architecture. From the very beginning it was the university´s intention to create a building of outstanding quality in all respects, including the artistic decorations. From the 1840´s to the end of the1890´s a grand programme of decoration was embarked upon, beginning with the vestibule and ending with the Ceremonial Hall. Since then these decorations have been supplemented with newer art. This book contains pictures and text on alle the pieces of art in the Main Building.
