The first half of the nineteenth century was a turbulent but momentous time for Denmark.  From being a sizable Nation in Europe it was decimated first in the Napoleonic Wars with the loss of Norway and later in 1864 with the loss of Schleswig Holstein.
In Denmark, as in other European countries, the cry for a democratic constitution caused social disturbance triggered initially by the February 1848 riots in Paris. The Danish monarchy, in crisis, both constitutionally and in terms of monarchical succession continued to lay claim on their southernmost duchies and sent their armed forces to destroy the Schleswig-Holstein insurgents and later to defend the country against the Prussian-Austrian Army.
Svendsen, in this book, describes three Danish generals who started their carrier as officers in Norway and Russia. They were all killed in action during the Schleswig Holstein Wars. The book describes their lives with happy times as well as sorrows and how it shaped their way to some of the highest positions in the Danish Army.
Svendsen leads us through the wars in Norway, Caucasus and Schleswig Holstein and describe some of the battlefields in this momentous period of European history.
