The articles are based on papers given at the conference "How Nordic are the Nordic Medieval Laws?" which was held at the Carlsberg Academy 22nd to 24th May 2003. The main theme of the conference was the Nordic medieval laws seen in a European context which again raised the question about just how Nordic these laws were. The problem was presented both through studies inthe Nordic laws as well as parallel studies. Thus, we return to the starting point for much of the work done on placing the medieval Nordic laws in an international legal tradition in the last decade. We do it in the hope that it may still be worth knowing more about the tradition of departure.
